Flying Report
- June 27
Just when it seemed the May gray and June gloom mornings would never end, they did, and Saturday dawned sunny and bright. Tom West who hasn’t ventured into the coastal mists for quite a while, fired up his Glasair at Hemet and flew in for the occasion. Mike Wills brought his Mazda powered RV4 down for show and tell. Mike is also a sailplane pilot who owns a RS-15 homebuilt sailplane which he purchased in Canada and has been tweaking prior to flying. He now has it operational and reports he is satisfied with it in all respects but finds the V tail configuration a bit low in authority at slow thermaling speeds.
The real heroes of the day however were Bob Johnson, who brought us 12 Naval Sea Cadets from the Midway for Young Eagle flights and also was cook for the day, pilots Frank Himmerich who brought his Piper Cherokee 235 in from Borrego, Armond Brattland with his Maule, Ryan flying his Tomahawk, and Nick Kruhmin flying the “club” Cessna 170, who provided the flights, and Jesse Clark who organized the assignments, paperwork, and scheduling of the Young Eagles.
Bob Johnson’s lunch of hotdogs, nachos, beans, potato salad, deviled eggs, green salad, and ice cream disappeared “down the hatches” of some 50 Chapter members, guests, and Young Eagles and their sponsors. The Naval Sea Cadets sponsored by the Navy League are from all over the country and are taking part in aviation ground school. They have been eating and sleeping aboard the Midway for the past couple of weeks. On completion of their training they take the Private Pilot written exam with a high percentage of success.

Lot's of things are
going on at Chapter 14; several aircraft are under construction at the chapter
facilities, we are continuing to fly Young Eagles each month (2nd Saturday), and
we still serve the best $3 lunch in town-- every Saturday at 11:30 in Hangar 1.
I understand there's also lots of activity on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
